Starthrower Foundation :: Starfish in Haiti

Starthrower Foundation director, Sharon Gaskell, took these pictures of Haitian youths in Cap-Haitien. Some of these young people are receiving Foundation assistance, but others are still waiting. Please help us help them.

Casimyr :: Casimyr, reading a French version of a Harry Potter book, at Lakay Fondasyon, our 'home' in Cap-Haitien.

Marcellus, 18 :: Marcellus comes to Lakay Fondasyon to eat every day, and always falls asleep, exhausted. He needs shoes; the white sandals are borrowed from a cousin.

Gaby and Lusnot :: Brothers, age 17 and 20, doing homework and studying for exams at Lakay Fondasyon.

Dieugrand :: Dieugrand 'test-driving' the new machin-a-koud -- the sewing machine.

Rose and Yomene :: students share a French crossword puzzle. Most Haitians speak Creole, one of Haiti's two official languages;French is the other.

Constance P., 17, 2nd year high school Sen Rafayel, father dead, mother ill, 7 younger siblings (they do not eat daily), Starthrower paid for the year so he can write exams.

Yvon A., 26, brother of Rosenie, has a sponsor and is now apprenticing as an intercity bus driver.

Taking inspiration from Loren Eisley's poem, help us turn these 'Starfish' into 'Starthrowers'. Given the chance for an education, and at least one meal a day, they can become tomorrow's professionals and skilled workers.

Erzilia W., 19 :: Erzilia's parents are deceased, and she needs help to care for her 6 younger siblings. She wants to finish high school; she has 3 years to go.

Auguste A. and Erzilia studying at Lakay Fondasyon.

Modeline J. :: Modeline's parents are deceased; she has no siblings. She is in her third year of high school. Starthrowers paid for her to write exams at Christmas.

Kesner C.,17 :: Kesner's parents are deceased; his brother Djempson died last July 2005, at age 6. His two other brothers and one sister would all like to be able to attend school.

Gaby D., 17, and Lusnot D., 20 :: These brothers are both in their third year of high school. Their sister was sending them to school; she died, at age 26, in October 2005.

Julia D. :: Julia (center), Gaby and Lusnot studying at Lakay Fondasyon.

Dieumane B., 16, 4th year high school, needs $290 outstanding tuition paid to write exams; lives in Cap-Haitien with cousin who has 6 children; father (who paid her school costs) died November 2005; mother, who is ill, lives in Sen Rafayel.
